When Thomas Lin Yun established “Black Hat Feng Shui” (or “Black Hat Sect Tantric Buddhist”) in the 1980s, it was a simplified version of Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism and Feng Shui for Westerners. Typical compass directions are replaced by the position of the door in this school of feng shui, rather than the traditional magnetic compass or the lo p'an. According to BHS feng shui, all rooms face the Career sector. If this is the case, adjacent rooms or houses may appear to be facing in different directions.

Despite its widespread use in the United States, BHS is not an authentic style of Feng Shui. Instead of using complicated formulas, the consultant would use a pa kua, which would be placed in a fixed position over any particular room, house, or property, and the eight sectors of the pa kua would be identified based on their location in relation to the entrance to each of the spaces concerned.
