Life expectancy in the United States has increased to 79 years (81 years for women and 76 years for men), but some people live far longer. Buettner understands the need of a rich gene pool, yet he claims that anyone can add 12 years to their life. He claims that you don't need to take a pill or start jogging to achieve this.

Buettner has been traveling with study teams to locations throughout the world where people live the longest since the 1990s. They look at how lifestyle and environment interact. He is the author of two books and works with Healthways to assist communities and businesses in the United States in making healthy improvements. This week, his most recent update will be available in bookstores: Ikaria, Greece, a 99-square-mile island 30 miles off the coast of Turkey, is featured in a new episode of National Geographic's Blue Zones. He claims that Greek researchers contacted him about Ikaria after the first edition was published in 2008.

“They told us,” adds Buettner, 52, that the island has ten times as many siblings over the age of 90 as any other area in Europe. “Then National Geographic gave us a grant to go there.” The initial mission was to check through birth and death certificates. The purpose of the second mission was to figure out what was going on.”

They verified the lifespan statistics and discovered that Ikarians have lower rates of cancer, cardiovascular illness, depression, and dementia than other Europeans, and that males outlast women.

Aside from eating a healthy Mediterranean diet (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, healthy fats, and fish and seafood), the people of Ikaria practice a number of other important practices and values.
