Almost all of the Tarot readings on Tarot.com are based on upright Tarot cards because they are easier to understand. Many skilled Tarot readers, on the other hand, use the cards.
Tarot cards can have a completely different significance if they are flipped over. There are some who believe that a reversed Tarot card translates into negative news, however this is not the case. It is not uncommon for reversed Tarot cards to bring good news, or to amplify, diminish, or reroute the message of the upright card.
In order to decipher the meaning of a reversed Tarot card, pay attention to the cards immediately surrounding the reversed card. Whatever the outcome, you may have learned a valuable lesson from it.
Opposite meaning of the upright Tarot card
In the minds of many Tarot readers, the reversed card conveys the exact opposite message to that of the upright card. There are many different interpretations of a card's meaning depending on how it appears in a reading. Reversed Tarot cards can be interpreted this way, although it's not always the best approach.
Increased or decreased energy
There are some tarot readers who believe reversed cards have the same underlying energy as their upright counterparts, but that it will either be heightened or diminished. Heartbreak can be predicted, for example, if you see the 3 of Swords Tarot card drawn up-right. Drawn backward, the 3 of Swords can represent either a lessened level of heartbreak or a feeling of unbearable pain. When reading reversals this way, it's up to the reader to figure out the card's true meaning, so trust your intuition and pay attention to the cards around it.
Delays and blocked energy
In this case, your reversed Tarot card may be trying to inform you that the upright meaning of the card will be blocked or delayed. Astrology cards can be used to predict future events, such as how happy a person will be, or how many children they'll have. While these goods may still be yours, you'll have to wait for them if this card appears reversed in your spread. As a lesson in patience or to help you find a way to get around the block, this isn't a bad thing.
Internal energy
In most cases, upright Tarot cards depict people, spirits, and situations that are influencing your life from afar, rather of directly affecting you. It is possible, however, for a Tarot card to have a different meaning when it is reversed. There are many cards that can signify a new person or relationship coming into your life, like as the Page of Cups. The Page of Wands reversed, on the other hand, could indicate that you're experiencing a shift in your own feelings about love and feelings, regardless of what's going on in your life at the time.
Tarot card readings that involve reversed cards are more difficult because the meaning isn't always evident, hence advanced Tarot readers should use them. However, the only way to improve is to get some practice in. With practice, you'll get better at Tarot readings, whether you're reading upright or reversed.
What does it mean when a tarot card comes out upside down?
If you've ever wondered what it means to be a fool, you've come to the right place. Reversed, the Fool denotes someone who is too cautious and worried. Having a tarot card definition reversed means that the card's meaning is reversed 180 degrees.
Does it matter if a tarot card is upside down?
The card's reversed meaning suggests anything having a shaky hold on the situation. Consider a circumstance, topic, or personality trait that is completely developed if it is represented by an upright card. The reversal of a card's suit indicates an area of life or character development that is in need of attention.
What does upright mean in Tarot?
I've compiled a list of four of my favorite approaches to reading reversed Tarot cards.
- They aren't all “doom and gloom,” but they're also not all “sugar-sweet.”
Use these similar techniques in your own Tarot readings or teach them to your students in Tarot training courses.
Method #1: Internalised Energy
The Empress, for example, is a representation of abundance, fertility, and the vitality of the mother. The Empress's energy might be experienced as loving and caring for others, or as successfully bringing a new endeavor to fruition in our daily lives.
‘Externally displayed energy' is the meaning of an upright Tarot card. As a result of this, the Tarot card's energy is expressed in the world around you, as well as your interactions with people and events.
However, reversed Tarot cards represent energy that has been internally expressed. That is, energy that we keep close to our hearts or that we keep hidden from others.
Empresses can signify different things, such as taking care of others or taking care of oneself.
In order to streamline the process, consider the Tarot card's upright meaning and then add “self” or “private” as a modifier to that meaning.
It's the lack of a “good” or “bad” message that I find most appealing about this method, which I've used before (unlike the traditional reversed card meanings which focus on the opposite of the upright card meaning). Where the energy is being sensed is just where it's being felt.
This method might also reveal areas in need of improvement or action. Your Tarot reading indicates that you're coping with external circumstances and your connections with others. When the majority of your Tarot cards are reversed, you know you're dealing with yourself and that any necessary acts or changes must be made first within yourself.
Method #2: Too Much or Too Little Energy
It is common for reversed Tarot cards to indicate an imbalance in energy. To put it another way, there is either an abundance or scarcity of energy.
The Queen of Wands, for example, is an excellent illustration. She portrays a confident and outgoing person when standing upright. The problem is, what happens when there is too much or too little of this energy in the system?
She may be overly confident and dominant in social situations (too much of the Queen of Wands energy). Perhaps she's a'shrinking violet' or a ‘wallflower' when she's in a room with other people (too little of the Queen of Wands energy).
In this case, I'll often ask a client a question while reading the cards. For instance, “How important is social confidence to you? Are you overly confident, or do you lack self-assurance?
And, as I'm wont to do, “How can you use your self-confidence in social situations?” In other words, what steps can you do to restore harmony and balance to this energy? This is a great feeling, isn't it?
Method #3: Blocked Energy
There are some subtle differences between this and the “too much or too little” energy technique.
It's not uncommon for energy to show up in our lives, but it's often obstructed or not presented in the most positive way.
It could mean that you're looking for moderation and harmony in your life but are now unable to experience it in a favorable way, such as the reversed Temperance card.
Ask yourself, “What's preventing you from reaching moderation and harmony in your personal and professional life?” In other words, find out what is preventing the flow of energy.
If there are any barriers linked with moderation and harmony, ask, “How can you release them?” The motto “everything in moderation” may be what you need to remember. Choosing your conflicts may be the key to a more harmonious relationship. Perhaps you need to let go of the idea that everything will always be in perfect harmony.
You can ask these questions to the Tarot to see what answers show up, or you can simply have an open discourse to see what comes up.
Method #4: Upside-Down Imagery
The images on the Tarot cards are a favorite tool of mine for connecting more intuitively with a situation.
Consider the images of an upside-down Tarot card and follow your gut instincts if it arises in a reading.
Reversing the Ten of Swords, for example, gives the impression that the swords are dangling from the man's back. Since it's a Ten, this marks the end of a cycle, which means that perhaps the client can finally move on to a new phase of their life.
In the reversed Page of Pentacles, the currency appears to be slipping from the man's grasp. There's a noticeable slackness in his grip and he doesn't appear to be focused. Perhaps this is an indication that you lack the discipline and focus essential to keep money from slipping away from you.
For visual people, reversed Tarot cards can be exceptionally strong when interpreted using this method. The images typically connect your conscious and unconscious minds, allowing you to tap into your intuition more easily. ‘

What is the meaning of the devil Tarot card?
Bess Matassa, an astrologer and tarot reader, emphasizes that “there is literally no right or wrong approach.”
Tarot has changed over time, allowing for more intuitive techniques to reading that emphasize leading with feelings. There are many methods to shuffle these days, and they're all valid. “As far as shuffle advice goes, “ignore preciousness in favor of pulsations,” explains Matassa. Feel the weight of the cards in your hands and use touch or sight if you choose to keep your eyes open while mixing.”
Having said that, if you're looking for a more structured approach to shuffling, consider one of these.
Are you supposed to shuffle tarot cards?
If all of this sounds a bit overwhelming, Howe advises you to take a deep breath and have faith in your own abilities. “It's easier to think of it as “I know all the meanings; it's just a matter of creating the connections and being able to explain them” if you use language or information that you already have.” She points out that the tarot makes extensive use of the four elementsearth, water, fire, and airwhich is advantageous because most people already have a basic understanding of the meanings associated with each element. “If you do that, your perspective will be more unique, and you'll be able to express yourself more freely.”
Howe suggests the three-card pull and the Celtic Cross to newcomers. Using a deck of 52 playing cards, three cards are selected to represent the individual being read: their present state of mind, their past experiences and their future aspirations. A six-card pull, with one card for each sector, is suggested by Howe.
How do beginners use tarot cards?
Does it matter if you're a newbie when it comes to Tarot spreads? Yes! It's a resounding yes. The tarot is a tool that aids us in gaining a better understanding of our current circumstances, honoring our intuition, and predicting what may happen next.
Can you read Tarot for yourself?
It's worth noting that there isn't a single way to shuffle the cards correctly. “Alvarez thinks the best way is whatever you are most comfortable with. “In my perspective, there is no single ‘correct' path.” It's important to keep in mind, though, that there are a few guidelines to follow.
Open your tarot card deck, and cleanse it if it's brand new
Cleansing a deck, whether it's a brand-new one or a used one that's only been opened once, is critical before using it. This usually entails inhaling the incense of palo santo or sage while meditating with your playing cards. If you're a tarot card tourist using someone else's deck, don't worry about this because it will help you get more accurate readings.
How do you shuffle tarot cards for the first time?
As many credit cards as possible can be used to reap many benefits at once, and then the cards can be closed so that the procedure can be repeated again and over.
The second rule is to begin with a blank slate. Flipping credit cards isn't a good idea if you're carrying a balance on any of your cards. According to Todd Zino, an entrepreneur who founded Wallaby Financial, an app for managing credit card rewards, the interest you pay each month would wipe out whatever benefits you obtain for using the card. Wallaby and CreditCards.com have teamed up to create WalletUp, a similar app. Flipping cards has earned Zino more than 130,000 points.
Spending a particular amount of money is often required in order to receive a reward. Spending a certain amount in a short period of time, like 90 days, is an example. Every month, Zino spends between $3,000 and $4,000 on credit cards, which he pays off in full when the bill arrives. In this approach, he avoids paying interest or buying unnecessary items in order to meet the spending requirements for trip points.
What order do you read tarot cards?
Shaking tarot cards is an excellent approach to purify and purge the cards' energy, but there are instances when you might want something more particular and ritualized. If you're new to tarot and want to start with a clean deck, this is a wonderful place to start.
- Your deck feels like it's been in heavy use, especially for emotionally charged readings.
Why should you cleanse or clear your tarot deck?
Maintaining a healthy flow of energy between yourself and your tarot deck can be achieved by cleaning your deck. A little spiritual hygiene is all it takes to maintain the connection clear and well-tuned. It's not mandatory, but if you're experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, you might want to experiment with a few different methods of clearing your energy deck (described in the section below) to determine which ones work best for you.
How often should you cleanse your tarot deck?
In this case, there are no hard and fast laws, which means that you can use your own judgment and intuition. Don't worry about it if you don't think your deck need it. Or, if you'd prefer, you can do a deep cleaning on a weekly or monthly basis. If it feels appropriate to you, you can even place a special crystal on the deck each night.
There's a strong chance you won't need to cleanse your deck as often if you do this simple ritual of placing crystals on your deck and setting it on an altar when not in use.
There are as many causes as there are ways to cleanse your playing cards.
Different ways to cleanse your tarot deck
Use the sacred smoke. Inhale the aroma of dried herbs such as rosemary, lavender, cedar and sage before extinguishing it with a snuffer. Burning herbs and a deck of cards should be held a safe distance apart so that the smoke drifts upward onto the cards, obscuring them from view. Turn the deck so that the smoke covers every part of the area. Then you may safely put your deck down and put out the fire.
The deck should be adorned with a selenite stone (black tourmaline or clear quartz). A couple of hours is fine, but I prefer to let it sit like this for at least an entire night.
A New Moon is ideal for putting them out. You can purify the deck under the new moon by putting it on a window sill on a new moon night and letting it sit there for a few hours. This is also a good moment to create a new goal for your deck.
Put the cards in a basin of salt and shake it up. Salt is a powerful cleaner that is both energizing and calming. When it comes to a serious detox, this is the best option for me. You can leave it in a dry spot for up to 8 hours, but keep an eye out for dampness.
It's a mad dash. Mix the cards like you're a child playing with muck on the floor. This approach is a wonderful reset because of its randomness and freedom.
Sorting and rearranging. The Major Arcana numbers 0-22 should be laid out in lines of seven cards across the deck (see photo above). After that, arrange the aces through kings of the cards in the following sequence for each suit: Swords, Cups, Wands, and Pentacles are the four basic card suits. It's best to look at the deck this way, then shuffle it well.

In terms of romantic relationships, the Death tarot card interpretation suggests that you've been enmeshed in patterns of behavior that no longer serve you. If you want your relationship to last, you have to learn to accept change. If things haven't been going well in your relationship, this card may also signal that you wish to call it quits. Always keep in mind that every door that the Death tarot card closes opens a new one. There are times when it is necessary for one or both partners to undergo a life-altering transition in order for both to grow. Keep in mind that the cards are only suggestions, and that you have the power to either embrace and welcome the evolution of your relationship, or to let it go completely if you want.
While the Death tarot card can be frightening at first, it can also bring about wonderful changes in love. The beginning of a new era, like an engagement, is a less stressful metaphor.
For those not yet in a committed relationship, the Death tarot card's love meaning can allude to letting go of harmful attitudes, ideas, or behaviors in order to make room for healthy ones.
What does the death tarot card mean in love?
Be careful who you confide in since the Devil can tell if a conman is lurking in the shadows.

Relationship breakdowns can be caused by a variety of factors, including substance abuse and mental health concerns.
Then you and your partner will need to get the help you need to deal with your particular problems. You and your partner aren't doomed, but you need to put your relationship's rehabilitation first.
